Some of the Anglo-Saxon burial mounds at Sutton Hoo Suffolk. The Southern mound cemetery was in use from the late 6th century to the mid 7th century. Many historians now believe they may have belonged to the Saxon Royal Family, the Wuffings who lived around 590-630 AD.

Originally the burial mounds would have stood high on the skyline announcing the importance of those buried there. Over the years through ploughing and other land use, many of the mounds have become flattened. Mound 11 near the tree is now barely visible.

This is mound 2 at Sutton Hoo. It was opened in 1938 but was found to be plundered However they found traces of an Anglo-Saxon boat and in a further excavation the 1980's found evidence that a body had been present.

1n 1939 archaeologist Basil Brown opened the largest of a number of mounds at Sutton Hoo (burial mound 1). Cutting a trench east to west, he found ship-rivets in the sand (pictured). Without removing them he carefully revealed the shape of a huge ship.

The Ship Burial
Artists image of the ship burial at Sutton Hoo. The man's burial, thought to be an Anglo-Saxon King, - possibly king Raedwald, would have been a great ceremonial event, to celebrate his importance.
