Daphne and the farme...
Daphne is a young sow (female pig) and very friendly. She likes to have her back scratched and rus up to greet people her tail wagging just like a dog. Picture taken at Farrowby Farm, Hertfordshire on January 15th 2007.

Daphne
Daphne has just had her first successful littler of pigs. The farmer starts to breed the pigs at 7-8 months. Each breeding sow (female pig) on the farm has two litters a year. Picture taken at Farrowby Farm, Hertfordshire on January 15th 2007.

Piglets
This is Daphne's third litter (the first two did not survive). Daphne is a Berkshire pig (a small breed) the piglets (baby pigs) are Berkshire and Large White crosses as their father - Bertie is a 'Large White' boar. The piglets are mostly pink as the male genes (which determine colour) are stronger...

Pigs can be breed all year round,unlike some animals, for example, sheep that have a lambing season in the spring. Each breeding sow (female pig) spends 6 weeks feeding her litter, 6 weeks resting and then six weeks with the boar (male pig). Picture taken at Farrowby Farm, Hertfordshire on January 1...

Pig shelter
Daphne had a litter of eight piglets. This is a good sized litter. The piglets are kept warm with straw and dry in corrugated shelters. They will be weaned and leave their mother at 6-8 eight weeks. Picture taken at Farrowby Farm, Hertfordshire on January 15th 2007.
