Long Straw, Combed Wheat Reed or sedge. Thatch is one of the oldest roofing materials. It provides effective insullation and is relatively easy to repair. It fell out of favor due to its fire risk and the lack of skilled thatchers. New flame retardants make thatch more competitive with modern materials. England has at least 30,000 thatched buildings. A roof will last between 20-70 years depending on the material used.
