The town built at a Roman Road Crossing - Dunstable was founded by King Henry I where Watling Street crossed the Icknield Way.  In Norman and Saxon times the Roman Roads had fallen into disrepair. The Icknield Way and Watling Street in this area was surrounded by thick woodland and may have looked something like this.
