Part of the former Dunstable Priory, originally founded by Henry I. The Priory was home to an order of Black Canons who ruled the town. They possessed power of life and death, had their own priory gaol and sat as judges with the king's justices. Many people were tired on a variety of crimes, including witchcraft. The Canons became very unpopular.
