The Cape Primrose is not in the primrose family but it does have some superficial similarities to the garden primrose particularly the somewhat coarse crinkled leaves. These plants are actually related to the African violet and have the same bilaterally symmetrical flower with a tube or funnellike corolla.These fused petals have two small rounded lobes and three larger and more colored lobes. The many hybrids produce an array of colorfull flowers that are raised up 1 or 2 on a naked stem (scape) that arises from the basal rosette of leaves. These plants require somewhat the same culture conditions as African violets, a warm humid environment with minimun draft, watering from the bottom and annual repotting in the spring. They are propagated by dividing the plants at the time of repotting.
