preserves its snowfield for over 5 months of the year. These give a clue to its most recent past. As the last ice age began to develop nearly 2 million years ago, the mountain peaks of Arran began to develop their own glaciers. These rapidly developed to form a complex ice cap. As the ice age developed, the scottish mountains generated a huge volume of ice and the grampian ice cap spread south carving the lochs around both Arran and Bute. The firth of Clyde now follows the line of these fault guided sea lochs.
