October but these plants were pictured appropriately enough on Armistice Day (11th November) on disturbed ground near Bedfordshire. This is probably the species of poppy that grew on the fileds of Flanders after the battles in WWI. Poppy seeds can lie dormant and grow rapidly on disturbed soil. Here they are brightening up waste ground on a building site.
