Fishing has been an activity since the earliest of times. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries fishing for fun, rather than food became increasing popular. Many fish caught are released again. In the 1950s and 1960s fish and wildlife agencies started to look at the problem of renewing and sustaining wild fish populations. In recent decades, agencies have focused on developing a mix of management practices to ensure the health of fish populations while providing angling opportunities.
