A tall herb (to 120cm) with rose-purple flowers that grows on waysides, woodlands, ditches, old industrial areas. In autumn it releases many downy seeds. Its thick roots can also send up new shoots, which spread horizontally. It also has the name fireweed as it thrives on disturbed ground and frequently colonises ground that has been cleared by fire. Picture taken at Stevington, Bedfordshire 1st July 2006.
