This sword was found in a burial mound at Sutton Hoo. It was thought to be a King's burial. In the early kingdoms under the King's control many modern institutions - such as the church, urban life, a monetary economy started to develop. Early kings claimed their authority from Woden, a Divine founding father and warrior god of poets and the skies. Kingly power was inherited and its authority was claimed to descend from the god. Kings had also to be warriors.
