soils. The berries should never be eaten raw as they are mildly poisonous. Cooking destroys the poison properties and they are sometimes used in preserves. The dried bark has been used medically as a pain/cramp cure and a sedative. It produces white/cream flowers usually in June-July and bright red fruits in September and October.
