During and after World War 2 many squadrons of the United States Army Air Force were based at airfields throughout the East of England. US forces are still based at Mildenhall in Suffolk. The 397th Squadron had its headquarters at Rivenhall in Essex. After the war some US airmen stayed in Britain; some married British wives who accompanied them back to America.
