South Street was the original route in to Bishop’s Stortford from London, until the Hockerill Bypass was created in 1670. Until the 19th and 20th Centuries South Street was a mainly residential street, it is now, however, the town’s main shopping area. Many of the older buildings were demolished in the 1960s and 1970s with the Town Redevelopment Scheme.
