A punishment for treason carried out on males (females were burned). The victims would be drawn on a cart to the place of execution, hung until nearly dead, placed back on the cart and taken to a bench where they had their entrails removed. They were then beheaded and sometimes their limbs were also severed. This picture is of the sentence being carried out on those involved in the gunpowder plot to blow up the parliament of King James I.
