These gravestones are part of the original medieval Dominican Priory of Blackfriars which stood on the site until 1583. The priory was replaced by the parish church of St Anne Blackfriars until this was destroyed in the Great Fire of london in 1666. At this time the parish was united with the church of St Andrew-by-the-wardrobe. The churchyard was used until 1849.
