The original church of St.Andrew-by-the-wardrobe was burnt down in the fire of London in 1666 and was then heavily bombed in the blitz. The current church re-opened in 1961.
Its name comes from the fact that during the reign of Edward III, the King moved his state robes from the Tower to a large building close to Baynard's Castle (a royal residence long gone) - the King's wardrobe. St Andrews became associated with this building and its named changed accordingly.
