Thomas Clarkson said - "The misery which the slaves ensure in consequence of too close storage is not easy to describe. I have heard them frequently complaining of heat and have seen then fainting almost dying for want of water".

Food was provided twice a day typically 3lbs 10 oz of yam, 10 oz biscuits, 3oz beans or perhaps a portion of slated beef.
