at the Royal Academy of Arts. On the Brink is Elmore's best-known work. It was painted in 1865. It is a 'moral genre painting' It depicts a young woman who has lost her money gambling, with a seducer, - a satan-like figure, whispering corrupting thoughts in her ear.
