(Roundheads) and Royalists (Cavaliers) fought many fierce battles. The first period of the war lasted from 1642 to 1646. In 1648 fighting once more broke out. This picture shows a display of the sort of uniforms worn by soldiers in the civil war in the 17th century, housed at the Cromwell Museum, Huntingdon. Early in the civil war there was little to distinguish either side except signal such as different colour sashes to show which side a soldier was on. This changed in 1645 with the formation of Parliament's new model army, which was well equipped, organised and clad in red.
