occurred - the Lower, Middle and Upper Basalticwith deep inter-basaltic layer of reddish brown 'lithomarge' -rich in clay, iron and aluminium oxides formed during the lulls in activity. The hexagonal columns occur in the middle basalt layer a similar formation can be seen at Fingal's Cave, Staffa, Scotland. The pattern in the causeway stones formed as a result of rock crystallization in conditions causing accelerated cooling, this usually occurs when molten lava comes into immediate contact with water.
