The E2BN Gallery contains a wealth of images to help support teachers in Key Stage 1 who are working around the them of 'Toys from the past'. There are hundreds of images to illustrate the development of toys through the last 2 centuries.
There are many different activities that teachers can do to make good use of these resources and the ideas below are just a few of the possibilities:
What does this toy do and how does it work? Show the children some of the images from the gallery and ask them to consider what the toy does in detail. They can discuss in groups or as a whole class what the toy was supposed to do. For instance what does the toys in pictures 91846 and 77996 and 663113 do and how would you use it? Would you like to play with this toy?
How do you use the toy in picture 92919 and how many people could play with it together? Does it look like any toys that you have today? Have you seen anything like this in a toy shop perhaps?
Does the toy in picture 78734 look like anything you've seen before? Does it look like a toy or is it quite like a machine that you've seen a grown-up using? How could you play with it? What does it do?
There are lots of toys from the past which look like horses such as the ones in pictures 69488 and 76372 and 66010. Would you like to play with these toys? How would you play with them? What kind of games could you play if you had these toys today?
Do you think the toy in picture 75004 is a modern toy or quite an old toy? How old do you think it might be? What sort of children might have played with a toy like this? How woudl you play with it?
