How to add annotated images to the Gallery

To upload material to the site users must first register themselves. E2BN will then check individual's credentials and eligibility and only then will a username and password be issued.
In order to add material you must first login to the gallery - see the helpsheet entitled ‘How to register and login' if you are unsure.

It is possible for users to add an annotated image to the gallery which can be interchanged with the un-annotated image. In the example below you can see the normal version of the image on the left with the annotated version on the right

Annotations can be added using almost any image-editing package such as Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop Elements, GIMP or Microsoft Photo Editor. (GIMP can be downloaded from http://www.gimp.org/ - it is an open-source free programme.)
You will need to create two versions of your image, one with the annotations and one without. Make sure that they are saved with different names e.g. the two images above might be called ‘HMS Belfast' and ‘HMS Belfast annotated'.

1.Create your annotated image by opening it in your chosen software - in this example we are using Paint Shop Pro 7.
a.Open the image in your software

b.use the text tools (usually the letter ‘A') in your software to add text labels to your image, as below

c. Now save this image as your annotated version so that you have two differently named images

Make sure that you are logged in to the gallery.

2.Upload your ordinary image exactly as you would normally do. If you are unsure about how to do this please see our helpsheet on ‘How to upload images to the gallery'.
3.Once your image has been uploaded to the gallery locate it by going to its album or by using the search tool

4.Click on the ‘Edit Details' button. This will open the ‘Image Information & Image Details' panels, as below:

On the left-hand side of the screen, under the ‘Functions' section, click on the ‘Annotate Image' section. This will open up the ‘Annotate Image' window. In this widow click on the ‘Browse' button and locate the annotated version of the image which you saved previously.

Click on the ‘Upload Image' button and wait for the image to upload. When done you will see a message telling you that it has been uploaded:

5.If you now locate your original image in the gallery and open it, you will notice that below the picture details and the download links there is an extra button which says ‘Show Annotated'.

6.Clicking this button will open the annotated version of the image:

The button in the bottom-right corner has now changed to ‘Show Original' - clicking this will bring the original image back into view.
