As humans ventured into space speculation rose about the possibility of aliens in turn visiting the earth. In June 1963, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space and one of the first people to successfully fly a spacecraft manually (for a short period). Before this all manouvers had been controlled from the ground.
