In this area, there is a mixture of rock types including resistant chalk and limestone and less resistant clays and sands parallel to the coast. The result is a series of ridges and valleys. This photograph looks along the coast from Lulworth to Durdle Door. The line of the resistant Portland limestone forms the cliffs. Where the sea has broken through this barrier, curved bays have been formed.
