The Siege of Colchester, during the English Civil War in 1648, had a big impact on the town. Many of the finest buildings were damaged or destroyed by cannon balls from Roundhead fire. This building, which dates from the 15th century, still bears the scars of the Siege, which lasted for 76 days. Holes from the musket balls can still be seen in the timbers.
