During Raedwalds reign about 599-625, Christianity spread into Kent after Pope Gregory sent missionaries to the Kentish king. Canterbury is the seat of the Primate of all England, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The first Archbishop was St. Augustine of Canterbury, who baptized King Ethelbert of Kent in 597 C.E. and consecrated his church in Canterbury to Christ sometime around 602. This portrait of St Luke may have been brought to Kent by St Augustine in 597AD.
