Chelmsford Bus Station was newly opened in 1931, when this picture was taken. However on Friday 14 May 1943 a 250kg bomb hit the Eastern National Bus Station in Duke Street. It destroyed 13 buses and caused fires to spread and damage local houses.
It took an hour and a half to control the blaze.
There were only two casulties, and both suffered minor injuries. Mr Lockwood suffered shock and a back injury when he was caught in the blast and a fireman suffered from cuts after damping down the fire.
