A flint handaxe, dating from the Lower Palaeolithic (around 750,000 to 100,000 years ago). Handaxes were the main tools of this period and were used for all sorts of things, from cutting meat to digging holes. It was found in a clay pit in Hitchin and had been dropped by the bed of an ancient river.
