St Peters-on-the-wall is a Saxon chapel built by St Cedd in 654 AD. He used the stones of the nearby old Roman fort, Othona. Cedd was a monk and priest at Lindisfarne off the coast of Northumberland. He sailed down the east coast to preach Christianity here at the invitation of Sigbert, king of the East Saxons.
