Built about 1425 this medieval brick staircase is preserved in its original state. Soon after it was built it was bricked up to stop prisoners escaping from the court room and so has remained unused until it was rediscovered recently.
A 'newel' staircase is one which is constructed around a central newel post i.e a spiral starcase.
