This pub was once known as the Kings Head but, in 1843, the railway came to Colchester and the landlord saw an opportunity for increased business so he bashed a hole through the Roman Balkerne gate structure to open up a view of the railway to the north. The pub became known by the nickname of 'The Hole in the Wall' a name that was officially adopted in the 1960's.
