Between 1830 and 1858 many of the restrictions on Jews in Britain were lifted - they were allowed to trade in the City, were allowed to practice as lawyers and then to become MPs. Baron Lionel de Rothschild, after a bitter fight, was elected in 1847 but couldn't take his seat in the Commons because of the oath requiring him to acknowledge the Church of England. This is page 2 of the draft of a speech in support of Jews being admitted to the UK Parliament. The draft of 6 pages is dated 20 May 1848.
