Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London was built as a monument to Admiral Horatio Nelson who was killed in active service at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. He was given a state funeral on a grand scale. The column was built between 1840 and 1843. It is 50 metres high and looks south towards the Palace of Westminster.
