Durham Castle
Originally built in the 11th Century, this Norman Castle stands opposite to Durham Cathedral, on a peninsula.

The garderobe - toilet in the castle was very draughty as it was just chute right through the wall of the castle. All waste dropped on the ground around the castle walls.

Portcullis slot in d...
A portcullis would have been dropped infront of the door in time of attack. The portcullis was made of wood covered in metal. The mechanism for raising and lowering the portcullis was situated in a room above the doorway.

the castle is believed to be the work of Gundulph, Bishop of Rochester. Gundulph was responsible for the design of the White Tower (the central Keep of the Tower of London) which is the only building in Britain with the same ground plan and the castle would once have looked similar to the tower.

The Norman tower from Chruchgate Street. Churchgate Street is the route pilgrims used to take to the Abbey in medieval times. The Norman Tower was the gateway into the Abbey. People travelled miles to get here and stayed in the city bringing trade and wealth.
